All rooms have marble bathrooms, four with whirlpool spa tubs, and one, the “Bailey Lloyd,” has a marble half bath with a romantic Victorian claw foot bubble jet tub right in the bedroom.

Three rooms have working fireplaces with carved marble mantels; the other two have working iron stoves. Each room has a flat screen TV, WIFI, hair dryer, and iron. Beach passes and special towels just for the beach are furnished. Also, note that due to the historic nature of the building, there is no elevator, so if stairs are a concern, make your room choice with that in mind: The Provence and Bailey Loyd are on the 3rd floor and the Victoria Albert, Barrett Browning and Chapel are on the 2nd floor.

The Victoria & Albert

You’ll feel like royalty when you stay in the Victoria & Albert Room at The Gables Historic Inn and Restaurant in Beach Haven, NJ. Named for a 19th century royal couple whose engineered marriage turned into an enduring love match, this welcoming room has many charming features that date back to the Victorian era — one that lasted from 1819, when the 18-year-old princess ascended the British throne — until 1901, when the revered monarch passed away. Fate decreed that she would mourn Prince Albert, who died at an early age from typhoid (the royal drains at Windsor left much to be desired in those days) for 40 years, but not before they had produced nine sons and daughters.

This period room, our most commodious, with its high ceiling and the original wide plank floors, is tastefully decorated with carefully selected antiques and wall coverings of ivory and silver damask. The working fireplace with carved marble mantel, and a comfortable queen-sized bed complete with canopy and down duvet create a sense of warmth and ease. A petite French marquetry desk, velvet chaise lounge and a mirrored armoire complete the decor. Perfect for a honeymoon or if you are planning to celebrate a special occasion in at the shore, like a birthday or wedding anniversary, consider hosting your event at The Gables Historic Inn and Restaurant. Then surprise the guest(s) of honor with a night or weekend in the Victoria and Albert Room. Additional comforts include a marble bathroom with whirlpool tub, The Gables Historic Inn and Restaurant’s terry-lined brocade bathrobes, and Italian toiletries from Antica Farmicia . Of course, modern amenities such as a flat screen TV, WIFI and clock radio have not been forgotten. A complimentary gourmet breakfast completes the whole delightful experience.
